Of Monkeys and Men

Q: Why do you refer to yourself as "Trickster"? Isn't that kind of...negative?

I've always been fascinated with the Trickster archetype; some of my favorite childhood characters were Tricksters: Bugs Bunny, Pippi Longstocking, Brer Rabbit, Robin Hood. When I got older and delved into mythology, I was naturally drawn to them still - Loki, Anansi, Hermes, Coyote, Sun Wukong. Modern pop culture is filled with them, and they're some of the most loved (and despised!) characters in media: Jack Sparrow, Dr. Who; Bart Simpson.

So what is a Trickster?

The Trickster is the class clown, the rule breaker, the mischief maker, the cunning thief whose antics fail much more often than they succeed. But in those failures are valuable lessons to be learned, both about life and about ourselves. Despite appearing selfish Tricksters often feel righteous in their actions, believing that the end result of their plans and pranks will ultimately benefit all, not just themselves.

It's the Trickster who points out the flaws in our carefully managed societies. He rebels against authority, pokes fun at the overly serious, creates complex schemes and generally plays with the Laws of the Universe. He constantly questions the rules, and causes us to question these same rules. The Trickster appears when a way of thinking becomes outmoded, when old ways need to be changed.

My identity as Trickster is meant to reflect all of these concepts, but most strongly it's meant to convey a sense of both the creative spirit and the simple complexity involved in being able to laugh at yourself, whether your successes or failures.

We all know I’m a social media junkie (I wanted to say “whore”, but I’m trying to keep this PG-13. Wait…ooops.) So of course I had to add gravatars to the website.

http://en.gravatar.com/

Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name (based on your email address) when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums as being “you”.

I decided, for now anyway, to add Count Alienzombotula here as my Gravatar avatar. The Count came about as a Facebook joke amongst friends, wondering why no one has come up with a movie that included Robots, Zombies, Aliens and Vampires.

Alien-Zombie-Robot-Dracula. Alienzombotula. Get it?

And that’s *Count* to you. Pleeb.

Getting there…

Slowly but surely, the webpage rebuild is getting closer to completion. I’ve finished html-encoding and uploading all of the Illusian Histories, and uploaded the Rainbow Magazine program PDF files.  I’ve also re-created a few old posts I’d made and fortunately kept enough notes on, so my blog content doesn’t look so bare.

I also linked to my old blog, Dr3amc@tcher – because it was fun writing it, and I’d rather not watch it vanish completely just because I’m not updating it anymore.

That leaves the Illusian story pages “Minotaur Chronicles” and “Mhauztales”, the Poetry section, and a better-defined Trickster Studios page beyond just the newly redesigned logo.

Thanks as always for your patience.

…okay, so I exaggerate a -bit- in that title…

In or around February 2010 I was asked if I could be background fodder for a few scenes in an indy film being made by friends of a friend. I had nothing better to do that night, so agreed.

Well it’s a year later, and that film is finally finished; the creators are working hard to get distribution and funding for a release this year.  I’m only in a few short scenes and mainly as background in an office environment, but it was an interesting experience and the film, “Changing Diego“, is an enjoyable comedy.

Plus, it would be my big screen debut – so of course I’d love to see it get a distributor!

Check out the trailer:
